Blogger SEO Experiment

It takes just as long to do something wrong as it does to do something right.

Since writing about Google AdSense and Tips for Increasing Page Views i have continued to read about more ways to increase page views and make money through Google AdSense.

It has been a bit overwhelming with all of the techniques people use. The goal is to get people to visit your site and click on your ads. But there are thousands of ways to do that. The big problem that i've found is Not Enough Time.

Here is what i created to help myself better understand the whole process. This is a graphical view of my current blog SEO profile:
blogger SEO profile, outline, plan, make money, adsense, graphical

And this is what i was planning on making:
blogger SEO profile, future, link wheel, pyramid, backlinks, revenue, outline, plan, make money, adsense, graphical
Long story short i decided to forget about making a new blog and focus more on "tweaking" my current pages. So as of right now, my Future Blog Outline is on the back burner.

Note:
This is a LONG TERM project and will take several months after all the work is done to see the final results.

Creating Backlinks:
This is the most important thing you should do to improve your site.

One quick example i read about, was similar to the idea i wrote about earlier, where you create 2 Yahoo accounts, then in Yahoo Answers, you ask a question with 1 account then answer it with the second. In the answer you paste a link to your site. Then back to the first account where you rate that answer as the best. This creates a backlink to your site that Google rates highly.

The new method i read about is to add a link to your site in Wikipedia. Or create a Wikipedia page describing something and include a link to your site. Here's an example of a Wikipedia page i quickly wrote to with links at the bottom to my Welding Glass ND Filter and ND Filter at Lake Erie. I quickly realized that this would take a very long time so i gave up on it.

The real thing i wanted to do was to Automate the entire process of making backlinks. I kept reading about a program called ScrabeBox. At first i used it to Auto Comment on 300,000 blogs. I just had to enter a name, email, URL and various comments and ScrapeBox would automatically post 1 comment to each blog.

But the more i read, the more i learned that Google is more focused on Quality Backlinks. Thousands of backlinks are still good, but having just a few backlinks from quality sites is just as good. So i used ScrapeBox again, but this time i sorted the list based on specific keywords and page ranks.

For example, lets say i wanted to create backlinks to my page about IQ Light. I would type in IQ Light into the keyword, scrape for thousands of pages related to that word. Then sort by page rank and keep just the best. Then sort out just the pages with low outbound links. (the fewer the number of outbound links a page has, the better my link will look)

I would have a list of 10-20 blogs that i could manually go to and type in a specific comment and link to my blog. This way i would have a better chance of the comment getting approved by the blog owner.

Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Also even if it did work didn't mean that i would get any more page views, just that i had 1 more backlink to my site, which would raise my ranking.

But every once in a while the backlink made a huge difference. One day i commented on a site called Mother Nature Network (MNN). It was just something like "ya i have bamboo in my backyard in michigan, check out some of the pictures" and added a link to one of my pages about bamboo. Because of that one link i've since had over 1000 links in just the past 3 weeks. Look at the first link under Posts: and the first and third link under Traffic Sources:.
blogger backlink stats, blogspot, posts, graph, results, revenue, adsense

It just goes to show that the more backlinks you have, the more traffic you will get and the better your page rank. And as opposed to many of the steps i'm doing, this one had an immediate result from something i did. So this is definitely something i need to continue doing. The only problem is that once again, i have 280 pages and it's going to take some time.

Social Bookmarks:
I started manually posting to just 3 sites: Digg, StumbleUpon and Del.ic.ious. It was a slow process of copying and pasting the title, URL, keyword and description. But when i checked my Blogger Stats i was surprised how many people viewed my page through those links. I just needed a faster way to submit all of my 280 pages.

Then i found socialposter.com where you only had to enter the information once. It was still fairly slow because you still had to visit and submit to each site.

Then i discovered Onlywire.com. This was what i was really looking for. First you sign up for 30-40 sites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Google+ and OnlyWire saves all of your information. Then you type in the information for the page you want to submit, click publish and OnlyWire will automatically post to all 40 sites.

The only problem with it is that with the free version, you are limited to 300 post per month. 300 may seem like a lot but it's really only about 8 submissions. Seeing as i have 280 blog posts it will take me around 24 month to submit all of my pages. So i am also using other similar pages to auto-post.

CTR:
Then i read more about Click Thru Rate (CTR). This is the percentage of how many people open up a page with ads vs the number of times the ads are clicked. After 8,660 views of my pages with ads, only 29 people had clicked on them, giving me a CTR of just 0.33%. Which means that for every 1000 people that view my ads i only make $1.93.

In order to increase the CTR i needed to rearrange my page layout. I found that most people view web pages like this:
website heatmap, eyes, user, look, adsense, placement, revenue

This is called a Heatmap. It shows where peoples eyes look most. Notice the ads on the right side of the page do not get any attention. Partially because most countries read left to right and partially because we are now trained to ignore ads.

So i decided to change my layout from this (having the large ad on the top right):
blogger adsense revenue, ad placement, optimize, location, make more money, custom adsense placement

Hopefully by changing the layout i would get a higher CTR. I'll be checking the % over the next month.

Backlinks from Directories:
Submitting page to Directories, which are sites that don't go out and crawl for web pages, like Google, but rather people submit their pages to them.

This can be done manually by searching for Directory's, clicking on "Submit URL" and typing in all the information it asks for like Name, URL, Email...The whole process took around 5 minutes per site.

So i like with the Social Bookmarks found a program to try and speed up the process. It saved the information and allowed you to import a list of directory pages. You would view the page, it would automatically input your information and submit. However this too started to become very tedious.

Then i discovered Free Directory Submitter, this program that will automate the process even better. You enter your information the same as in Directory Submitter, but it goes a step further by allowing multiple Title and Descriptions. That is great because Google will notice if suddenly 200 links are created overnight with the exact same text. Then when the process is started, it finds the pages, enters the info at random and then all you have to do is enter the Captcha text. Instead of taking 5 minutes per page this drops it down to around 3-10 seconds.

Summary:
There are lots and lots of programs, websites, forums, directories and articles that you can use to achieve your goal. I can't remember everything i have used and all the steps i have read about. But for me the most important thing was to use these tool to try and speed up the processes.

I'm still far from being an expert in anything, but by doing some of these basic steps i have made a huge improvement in my Blogger Stats. As you can see from the large increase in my last 2 months. I've gone from averaging 100 views per month, to 1000 views per month, to as of right now 6,000 views per month.
blogger, blogspot, post, overview, stats, all time, results, monitor, how to use stats page

From the very beginning of this process i always read that this is a long term process, don't expect immediate results. I hope it increases even more in the future.

How to Make Your Profile Picture Appear on Google Search

Penulis : Admin Ashish Chaturevdi on Monday, 26 March 2012 | 10:49

Monday, 26 March 2012

If you type "Miguel Cabrera Stats" into Google Search, you don't even have to click on any links to get the results. Google will display them automatically. As you can see below.Miguel Cabrera Stats Rich Snippet
That's because Google is working with something called Rich Snippets. It's a way for web pages to have small images or information appear for certain pages.

I've noticed it a lot of pages have a picture of the author. So i tried to figure out how to get my picture to show up next to a link for my blog. Hopefully this would add to my increasing ways to increase traffic to my blog.

I'm not going to bore you with all of the details, but it's a bit complicated. A summary of what i did is:
  • Sign up for Google+
  • Update your Google+ Profile, checking certain boxes and add profile image
  • Update your Blogger Profile and add image
  • Add a link from the Blog HTML, linking to your Google+ Profile page
  • Add one link back from Google+ Profile to your Blogger Profile and actual Blog
  • Add a rel="me" tag in your Blogger Profile
  • Add a Privacy Policy to your blog.
It took a long time to figure everything out and i thought that i finally got rid of all the errors. I was able to check that my profile was Verified using the Google Rich Snippets Testing Tool.

LinkHere's what it looks like when i checked my blog homepage. It said Verified in green and my profile picture was on the right.
Rich Snippets Testing Tool Verified
Everyone said that it would take between 2 days and a week before it shows up on Google Search properly. So I checked after 1 day...nothing. I checked after 2 days...nothing.

I was confused so i decided to look at the Rich Snippets Testing Tool page again. When i put in my Blogger Author page it seemed to work. Notice my picture on the left under the link. That's exactly how i want it to look on Google Search.
Rich Snippets Testing Tool Verified profile
So i continued checking other pages on the Rich Snippets Testing Tool page, most were like the first screenshot from above, with nothing to the left of the page title. But randomly when i put in the URL from a page i posted 5 days earlier my author image appeared. I thought "Great...it's starting to work."
Rich Snippets Testing Tool Verified author image

BUT, when i went to the actual Google Search and typed in keywords to find the page it did NOT show the image. (3rd link down)
Rich Snippets no author image
Even more confusing was that when i put the URL in for another page, it put the author image up for my sister, who had commented on that post.
I must not have clearly identified who the author was.
Rich Snippets wrong author image
During the entire process of reading about Rich Snippets, I did figure out how to add a Star rating and review number. This is typically used for pages like movie reviews. So what i did was put in 4.7 stars and 216 people, which is totally made up. But it makes it appear like my website has a high rating.
Rich Snippets star and rating
Then a few days later it appeared in Google Search. But only on some pages and only the stars and review, not my profile picture.
Rich Snippets star and user rating
The easiest way to view all the pages at once is to type "site:davewirth.blogspot.com" (without the quotes) into Google Search. It brings up all related pages for that site. It showed me 365 pages, some with stars, some without, but none with a picture.

I feel like this will be an ongoing process and expect that at some point my profile picture will show up next to some of my blog links. I was interesting learning about all of the tricks to get a website noticed. And i think that i will try adding more rich snippet data to my page. That is something that Google will continue to emphasize. But as of right now, for me, it's a lot of trial and error.

A few days later i thought that i might have figured it out with this page, it switches your Blogger Profile to link with your Google+ Profile. But still no change in the result.

Google AdSense and Tips for Increasing Page Views

Penulis : Admin Ashish Chaturevdi on Thursday, 23 February 2012 | 05:12

Thursday, 23 February 2012

I drew the image below to summarize the way to increase traffic and raise page views of my blog.
Google AdSense and Tips for Increasing Page View
I just finished this long and sometimes boring process. Below is an explanation of what i did.

It all started a few months ago when Google sent me an email saying that i should include AdSense to my blog. I wasn't sure exactly what it was, but i agreed to try it out.

AdSense works when Google automatically puts advertisements on my blog. Those adds only show up if the blog is found through Google's search engine. So if you just type in http://davewirth.blogspot.com you likely won't see any advertisements. But if you search for something on Google, then click on a link to my page, you might see an targeted add on the side. If people click on the adds, the referred website pays Google, then Google then pays me, minus their fees.

From my blog's stats page i see that i average around 1000 page views a month for all of my 250 pages.
Blogger Stats Page Screenshot
As of the middle of February, i'm up to $1.55 from AdSense. I usually get something like 1¢ per day.

Google doesn't actually pay me the money until i reach the "payment threshold" of $100. At the rate i'm going, i won't be receiving a $100 check from Google until the year 2045.

AdSense Earnings Screenshot
So here are the ways in which i tried to increase my stats:

1. Check my Google Page Rank

The first thing i did was check out my Google Page Rank. Page Rank is the algorithm that Google uses to rate web sites. It's just one of many factors that Google uses when displaying search results. The top score a site can receive is 10.

My current score is 0. Not so good.
Page Rank Site Results
Google only updates it's Page Ranks four times per year so no matter what i do, i might not see a change for a few months.

2. Submit URL to search engines
I saw that there are websites like FreeWebSubmission, where you can submit your URL to several search directories with a single click. It seemed a little shady but i tried it anyways. Apparently it worked but the only two sites that i had heard of were Google and Bing. I don't think there are a lot of people using "Info Tiger" as their primary search directory.
Free Web Submission URL Results
Also i read that if Google thinks you are sending a spam URL to their site, they may block your web page from its search results. I'm hoping that doesn't happen.

3. Add Blogger Labels and META tags
I read that adding keywords or labels to each page will help search directory's know what each page is about. So i went back through all my posts and added Labels to every page, which give a short description.

Here's what some of the post's looked like before.

Blogger Labels Posts
And here's what they looked like after adding the labels.Blogger Labels Posts META Tags
Then i read that Blogger Labels don't actually help at all. They are simply a way to organize all of your blog posts. The thing i really needed to add was called META Tags. Meta Tags are the actual keywords and descriptions that will help search directory's quickly match my page to keywords someone has searched for.
I read through lots of pages until i found a few basic lines of HTML code that had author, description and keywords meta tags. I then had to add that to the existing HTML code at the top of my title page. It wasn't too bad since i had already typed out the keywords in the Blogger Labels. I simply copied and pasted them into the lines of code. The tricky part was making different keywords and descriptions show up for each individual page.
For example my META Description for THIS page is:
meta content='The best tips i've found for increasing page views to your blog, blogger, backlinks' name='description'

Keywords are:
meta content='algorithm, blog, blogger labels, blogger, feed, Google AdSense, HTML, increase views, META Tag, page ranks, search directories, tips, traffic, tricks, backlinks, ' name='keywords'

Author:
meta content='David R. Wirth' name='author'

and Robots, which somehow help Google to index the page:

meta content='index,follow' name='robots'/>
meta content='all,follow' name='robots'/>

This is a screenshot of what the actual HTML code looks like:
Edit HTML in Blogger
I also added 5 lines of HTML code so that only my Page name shows up not my Blog name. For example, now if someone is searching "how to build a bed" Google might show my post a week ago as Twin Beds followed by my META Description, which that person is more likely to click on rather than No title required . . . - Twin Beds, with no description.

4. Add Backlinks
I read that having other webpages on the internet that link to your page, will help increase your page rank. This is called adding backlinks.

I actually did three things to create the backlinks.

First was use a backlink generator website. Amazingly enough i went to Freebacklinksgenerator.com. This site reminded me a little of the shady URL submission page, but it too seemed to work. Although i think Google would consider these as "bad" backlinks. The algorithm that Google uses would probably give a low value to those links. There are lots of other sites that will also creat the backlinks, like backlinkgenerator.net.
Free Backlinks Generator Page
So now there are 50 random, phony web pages out there that have a link to my site. The pages it creates end up looking like this.

The second trick i did was to create
an account on Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon. They are sites where people upload and vote on popular stories and pictures on the internet. I figured that i could submit a few posts, which link to a few of my more interesting blog pages.

Here's my homepage on Digg.

And on Reddit.
Submit Blog to Reddit
The third thing i did is by far the sneakiest. I watched a video where this woman said that she was able to really increase traffic to her site through Yahoo Answers.

What she did was create 2 Yahoo user names. With the first user name she would post a question related to one of her pages. Then with the second user name she would answer the question and include a link to her own page. She would then go back to her first name and vote herself as Best Answer.

Apparently Google's algorithm thinks highly of Yahoo Answers. So if a link to my blog is on there it should increase my page rank and also cause my pages to show up higher on Google's search results.

5. Create a Sitemap and FeedI signed up for Google Webmaster Tools. It is similar to the Stats tab in blogger but it provides additional information and also allows you to create a Sitemap. I actually created 4 sitemaps, which are direct feeds of my blog, nothing fancy.: http://feeds.feedburner.com/NoTitleRequired

I also updated my feed to allow for different formats and ways which it can be viewed. Hopefully this will give Google and other search directory's another way to link to the site. Plus it was real easy, just a few clicks and Webmaster Tools does it all for you.

6. Upload video and link to Youtube
I read that 50% of all traffic on the internet is from videos. And 12% of that traffic is from Youtube. Now i know that is mainly because videos requires lots of information but it still may help.

So i created my own Youtube Channel and started to upload some of my video's with links to my blog. I compressed the sizes to Youtube quality and then uploaded 109 of my video's. I'm still in the process of updating their titles and adding descriptions with links to my blog.

7. Monitor the Information
Finally i need a way to see if this all works. To monitor everything i am using the Stats Tab on the Blogger website. This gives me lots of numbers and charts like the image at the top.

Here is an example in the Stats tab of my Blogger page, these are my most popular blog posts of all time.Monitor Stats on Blogger Blog
And here is what the people typed into the search box that leads them to my blog.

Also i'm using the Google Webmaster Tools that i created earlier. It goes into a little more in depth and has additional stats. It shows you things like words that were searched for that may link to your pages.
Google Webmaster Tools Screenshot

This is an example of one of the tables that Google Webmaster Tools gives you. It's interesting to see things like out of the 2,000 times people type in "cool easy pictures to draw" they actually click on the link to my site less than 10 times. I have a better chance at increasing that number, the higher up on the search results my page is.
Blog Search Queries
It's actually been really interesting to read all ways to improve your blog. Lots of the stuff out there are gimmicks but i'm hoping that i weeded through that and found the usefully tips.

After all this work i'm not sure it will do anything to increase the amount of people that view my blog pages. But we'll see. My short term goal is to average 2,000 page views per month by January 2013. Then maybe i'll start making 2¢ per day.

Blog Stats

Penulis : Admin Ashish Chaturevdi on Monday, 12 September 2011 | 05:33

Monday, 12 September 2011

Blogger.com has the cool ability to show the stats of people who visit your blog. It shows tons of stuff like what country they are viewing it from, what operating system they use and what page they viewed.
blogger stats, audience, track
I was surprised to see that the most popular pages each month are always the IQ Light and TV Antennas and Fractals.
track blog stats, stats page, report
With over 200 pages i usually get around 1000 views a month, which is nuts.
